The Difference(s) Between Cosmetic and General Dentistry

Both cosmetic and general dentistry involve the dental arts, but they have significant differences.

General dentistry

General dentistry is a critical aspect of your overall health, as it involves keeping your teeth, mouth, and gums healthy, restoring decayed teeth with fillings, and treatments such as placing crowns.

Cosmetic Dentistry

A cosmetic dentist is trained in general dentistry, with advanced training in total smile restoration. After completing a four-year dental school program, Dr. Miranda has three additional years of training in an American Dental Association (ADA) graduate program as a prosthodontist: a specialist in restoring missing teeth or jaw structures.

A prosthodontist is an advanced specialist in cosmetic dentistry, trained in cosmetics, dental implants, crowns, bridges, dentures, TMJ treatments and more. A cosmetic dentist who has the skills and knowledge achieved by Dr. Miranda has the skills to restore even the most complex dental problems and create a healthy, beautiful, smile.

A long term solution to a healthy & beautiful smile

Missing teeth are more than a source of embarrassment, they often lead to other oral health problems. Any gaps in your smile can cause an increase of bacteria in your mouth, putting you at higher risk for dental disease. Missing teeth can lead to bone loss in the law, altering the structure and appearance of your face. Your remaining teeth can shift, altering the alignment of your bite, causing discomfort. These are all serious problems that can be resolved with a dental implant.

Your dental implant will not only fill spaces in your smile, but has the advantage of improving your general oral health. Dental implants not only look natural and attractive, but function exactly like natural teeth, and provide a strong, natural bite. Dental implants, once in place, do not require specialized care, and with proper maintenance, will last a lifetime. With routine appointments with us every six months, you can keep your new smile looking bright and healthy for years.

Cosmetic Dentistry

We practice the dental arts, and get great joy in the look of pleasure when our patients see that perfect new smile in the mirror. Every person faces unique cosmetic challenges, and there is no cookie-cutter solution in cosmetic dentistry. A full evaluation of your teeth and mouth will allow us to craft a treatment plan that will result in a healthy, brilliant smile using our cosmetic dentists and their superb application of these dental arts.

What Is General Dentistry?

The American Dental Association (ADA) defines general dentistry as the evaluation, diagnosis, and/or treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral cavity, the maxillofacial area (jaws and face), and the adjacent and associated structures, including their impact on the body. Rapidly advancing science and technology are providing solutions to problems in general dentistry and enhancing the dental practice environment. At Altamonte Implant & Cosmetic Dentistry, we use the latest advances in medical technology in our state-of-the-art facility.

General Dentistry Services

We provide high-quality general dental care that begins with a thorough examination of your mouth, teeth, gums, and associated structures. Specific general dentistry services we offer include:

  • Teeth cleaning: The ADA recommends a professional cleaning every 6 months. No matter how diligently you brush, floss, and pay attention to good oral hygiene, our dental healthcare providers can clean more deeply and thoroughly than you could with consistent brushing and flossing.
  • Preventative care: Regular oral exams and cleanings can help prevent dental problems in the future. In addition to thorough cleanings, exams, and X-rays, we offer fluoride treatments, sealants, mouth guards, and oral cancer screenings as part of the preventative care we provide.
  • Metal-free fillings: Gone are the days when cavities were routinely filled with amalgam silver alloy, creating a “metal mouth” appearance when you opened your mouth. We offer fillings made of porcelain or resin materials for a more aesthetically pleasing, natural look.
